BIRDS has a very humble beginning in terms of its area of operation, working in one of the most backward mandals of Kurnool district viz., Midthur. Activities of BIRDS were limited to this mandal. In 1996, BIRDS started expanding to other backward mandals within the Kurnool district. By the year 2003, BIRDS covered six mandals in the district, viz., Midthur, Kolimigundla, Owk, Rudravaram, Chagalamarri and Allagadda.

BIRDS entered other districts, as APFAMGS and SPACC Project are close, now it is working on GwGPRI-AP Project. It extended its areas of operation through partner NGOs to five districts of Andhra Pradesh viz., Anantapur, Chittoor, Cuddapah, Kurnool and Prakasam.

Through CHETANA Network, BIRDS is presently working in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
