Farmer Producer Organization (FPO)

BIRDS is involved with rural community especially farmers, right from its formation in 1991. APWELL, APFaMGS, SPACC and GwG PRI AP Projects implemented with prime focus on water management, governanace, farming and its allied activities. Lot of hurdles being farmers comes across regarding

  • Seed (Availability, Quality & Quantity)
  • Manures & Fertilizers
  • Plant protection measures
  • Sufficient & Timely rains
  • Water availability for irrigation
  • Adverse climatic conditions

In spite of all these risks farmers obtaining the produce from fields, most of them losing crop due to lack of moisture which throwing them in to “ Distress“

Farmer Producer Organization is established with the intention of “Eliminating Distress among farming community “

In the project orientation workshop held in November 2015, FPOs are discussed at length and Information on the legal framework and processes for the formation of FPOs was shared with the participants.

BIRDS was selected to form first FPO as pilot, FPO is registered as “Ahobila Rythu Uthpathidarula Sangham Producer Company Ltd“ under Registrar of companies Act 2013 with Register number: “U01100AP2016PTC104170“

FPO comprised 12 Directors 11 from farming community and 12th Director is Mr. V. PaulRajaRao, E.D., BIRDS

Objectives of FPO

  • Cost of inputs will be reduced as the purchases will be made in bulk and timely availability of inputs with good quality
  • Marketing facility in reach of farmers with good price for their farm produce and thereby enhancing economic status of farmers
  • Encouraging the cultivation of ID crops
  • Producing food grains that are free of chemicals
  • Soil and water are protected from being contaminated with chemicals by adapting “Organic Farming“
  • Diversifying the produce by processing to make it ready to cook and ready to eat products

Formation of Farmer Interest Groups (FIG)

It is felt essential to create awareness on benefits of FIG formation at village level with the main focus on the following points:

  • Reduction in input cost as bulk purchases are made for seed, manure tec.,
  • Marketing will be planned for selected crops
  • NPM methods will be promoted which will help to reduce the cost of production and aids in soil rejuvenation and facilitates organic certification over 3 years period 

Important benefits from FIGs

It is felt essential to create awareness on benefits of FIG formation at village level with the main focus on the following points:

  • Better market price can be demanded through organized FIGs at village level
  • Helps to change from chemical input agriculture to eco friendly agriculture
  • Work collectively for better results
  • Organic certification for  products
  • As organized FIGs, we can have better access to different government schemes
  • Provides them space and time to come together for discussions
  • If interested it provides opportunity to save money on their own ( not for any MF affiliation)

Selection criteria for members of FIGs:

  • Ability to pay entry fee: as per the decision of the staff and farmers presented , they decided Rs 100/- as entry fee which is non refundable 
  • Ability to pay share money : the group decided Rs 500/- as share money for which refund rules are yet to be framed
  • Willingness to abide by rules to be framed under cooperative principles
  • Willingness to shift to non-chemical agriculture by practicing NPM methods from the immediate kharif season

Composition of FIGs:

  • 15 to 20 members in each village
  • 30- 50 % membership from women
  • 2 elected group leaders for each FIG
  • As far as possible social inclusive groups to be formed

Criteria to select group leaders (preferably both genders)

  • Person with  literacy skills ( 10 class pass or fail)
  • Accessible and trustworthy
  • Within the age group of 40 -50  years
  • Able to give their time and commitment to growth of the group and  company
  • Should be able to practice organic agriculture methods
